Google maps out the Grand Canyon with over 9500 pictures

Google maps out the Grand Canyon with over 9500 pictures

Google Maps has gotten down and dirty in Arizona by mapping out over 75 miles of trails and roads in one of nature’s most impressive wonders.

The initiative is part of Google’s new Trekker program, which puts the famous 360-degree, 15-lens street view cameras in on a wearable backpack, allowing Google maps to give you up close and personal views of areas accessible only on foot.

You can access the wide array of beautiful Grand Canyon imagery right here.

With on-foot mapping now added to their repertoire, perhaps we’ll see some more extreme locations added to Google’s World Wonders Project. Everest, anyone?

Bada OS version 2

Bada OS version 2.0.1 beta now available for the original Wave too - try it out if you dare

The original Samsung Wave (which first showcased the SuperAMOLED wonder of a display) is arguably among the best equipped smartphones out there (outside the Android and iOS camps). It’s bound to get even hotter with the release of the Bada OS 2.0.1. It will surely take some time but while you wait, you can try the beta version right now.

The beta brings a set of new features, worth having, like the new UI look, the drag-down widgets screen, the Music and Social hubs, the revamped gallery with stacked albums, the 3D cover flow-like music player, the Dolphin browser 3.0. You might remember the beta landing on the Wave II just a couple of days ago.

The software is still in its beta stages so there could be some bumps along the way. Reportedly adding new widgets to the homescreen crashes the OS, IM doesn’t work with all accounts, the Google app and Facebook app don’t work, Kies sync works only with contacts and switching off the handset crashes the OS.

Check a short video, showcasing the changes brought by the Bada OS 2.0.1 beta.

Here’s a link if you want to test the Bada OS 2.0.1 beta on your original Wave.

Thanks for the heads-up, Daium

Gresso Luxor World Time Gold offers ancient luxury and a high price tag

Gresso Luxor World Time Gold offers ancient luxury and a high price tag

Imagine that you live in a perfect world where the budget for your next phone purchase is $30,000. You are already tired of diamond and gold encrusted iPhones, Blackberrys, and whatnot, and feel the need to be somewhat different. Oh, and yes, I almost forgot – you also have a passion for fine watches.

Gresso Luxor Gold

The answer to all your heavy phone requirements comes from nowhere else but Russia in the face of Gresso Luxor World Time Gold.

Expanding the already available Gresso’s Luxor series, the phone is crafted from 18K gold. Its screen has double anti-reflective sapphire crystal just like in the finest Swiss watches. The keyboard keys are made from the same material. The back of the phone houses six independent watch mechanisms which are covered by (again) sapphire crystal.

The price of this phone/timepiece is exactly $30,000. Interestingly enough, there is no information on the internal hardware of the phone or any technical specs. But with such a dramatic appearance, we can safely assume that they can be overlooked.

Apple iPhone 4G – lost

Apple iPhone 4G – lost, found and dearly wanted back

It seems Gizmodo managed to contact Gray Powell – the guy who lost the iPhone 4G prototype. Well, in short – Apple wants their lost baby back. But Mr. Powell also shed some light on the matter how the iPhone prototype found its way out in the hands of the press.

Here is the short version of a long adventure.

Gray Powell is an Apple engineer, who took his iPhone 4G prototype along for a night out. The prototype was cleverly disguised as an older generation device. He had a couple of beers and left the bar without the Apple gem.

On the next morning one of the guys that found it in the bar discovered that this iPhone is nothing he has ever seen before.

At that point Apple could have still recovered the prototype as the guy played it fair and called many Apple phones, but no one believed its story.

The rest of the stuff is already well-documented – the iPhone 4G or whatever it’s called went public and almost every detail about it went online.

The end of this story came when Gizmodo contacted Gray Powell – they offered him his prototype back.

Gray Powell: Hello?
John Herrman: Is this Gray?
G: Yeah.
J: Hi, this is John Herrman from Gizmodo.com.
G: Hey!
J: You work at Apple, right?
G: Um, I mean I can’t really talk too much right now.
J: I understand. We have a device, and we think that maybe you misplaced it at a bar, and we would like to give it back.
G: Yeah, I forwarded your email [asking him if it was his iPhone], someone should be contacting you.
J: OK.
G: Can I send this phone number along?
J: [Contact information]

According to California law if you lost something and someone found it, you have three years to claim it back as its owner. Obviously it’s not enough that Gizmodo offered the device back voluntarily. Apple’s legal department HAD to claim it back themselves. Here’s their letter:

Seems like those guys won’t take No as an answer.

Android chief Sundar Pichai says he is "excited to try iOS 7"

Android chief Sundar Pichai says he is "excited to try iOS 7"

The unwrap of iOS 7 yesterday has not only got the attention of existing users of Apple’s mobile OS, but has also intrigued Android’s newly appointed chief Sundar Pichai.

This is evident from his very own tweet stating that he is “excited to try iOS 7 beta”. Sadly, it’s unlikely he’ll share his impressions afterwards, so we won’t know for sure how Apple’s latest iOS iteration made him feel.

Pichai notes that he has to register as a developer first in order to get access to iOS 7. Here’s hoping that as a head of both Android and Chrome he has a buddy or two who van register his iPhone as a developer device.

Chrome 17 prerenders the pages as you type

Chrome 17 prerenders the pages as you type, screens your files before downloading

Following the launch of Chrome Beta for Android, Google has updated its desktop browser to v17 (17.0.963.46, to be precise). Among the new features over the previous stable version include the ability to prerender pages to speed up your browsing. Now, when you type a URL in the Omnibox, Chrome will automatically start prerendering the website it thinks you are mostly likely to open, which means when you hit Enter, chances are the page will open instantaneously.

Another new feature is the ability to check files to see if they’re malicious. When you download an executable file, such as .exe or .msi, Chrome will try to match the file with its online database to see if it is genuine. If it doesn’t match its whitelist, Chrome will check with Google for the websites history and if the site is known to provide malicious content then the download is cancelled. Hopefully, this should reduce the number of instances where people accidentally download a malware thinking it is a useful software.

You can click here to download Chrome or go to Tools > About Google Chrome to update it.

HTC Vivid for AT&T showed off its Android ICS update

HTC Vivid for AT&T showed off its Android ICS update, here's the video

The LTE sporting HTC Vivid for AT&T is the first handset from the Taiwanese company’s U.S. lineup to get an update to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. The older HTC Sense 3.0 got a bump as well – its version is now 3.6.

Quite naturally, we were curious to put the HTC take on Google’s latest OS through its paces. After all, the HTC Sense 3.6 flavored Android 4.0 ICS will find its way (it actually is already in some parts of the world) to the company’s dual-core Android lineup from last year. Therefore, if you happen to own a member of the aforementioned group of devices, read on to get an idea what will your phone’s interface look like after the major OS update.

The improvements, which the Android 4.0 ICS has brought to the HTC Vivid are a lot. The same goes for Sense 3.6. HTC’s proprietary UI has now brought Beats Audio to the handset, new camera UI and modes, as well as even more options to customize the looks of the OS. Most importantly though, the entire device feels faster after the update. The interface transitions are more fluid than before and there is no lag to be found. See for yourself in the video below.

We will be examining the ICS update from HTC further, so stick around for more!

Turn your iPhone's iOS into OS X with this stunning mod [VIDEO]

Turn your iPhone's iOS into OS X with this stunning mod [VIDEO]

Ever wanted to have the OS X experience on your iPhone 4? We are afraid we are still some way off from having the real thing, but this latest iOS mod that we found is one great start. Dubbed Ultimatum and naturally only available to jailbroken iPhones, it mimics the Lion OS X quite successfully.

Customizations run really deep here and the mod even introduces new features including Launchpad, Finder menus, stacks etc.

The mod is still in beta, so it’s not publicly available, but you can gain access to it by making a $3.50 donation to the developer. There will be some bugs, for sure, but it still seems like a good deal, considering the effort it took to create such a mod.

You can check it out in action in the following video:

Just imagine this thing running on an iPad instead (we do) – it would be incredibly cool. Here’s hoping a tablet-friendly version pops up soon!

If you are interested in what’s currently available, though, follow the source link for detailed description and information on how to get the mod up and running on your iPhone 4.

New Toughpad tablets by Panasonic are the marines of the slate world

New Toughpad tablets by Panasonic are the marines of the slate world

Staying true to its Toughbook series of notebooks, Panasonic has decided to transfer some of its experience to the tablet scene with the 10-inch Toughpad A1 and 7-inch Toughpad B1.

Both the Android-running slates are designed and built to withstand hard abuse and the elements alike. Interested? Here are some specs for you.

Panasonic Toughpad A1

The Toughpad A1 packs a 10-inch 1024 x 768, 4:3 display with anti-gale protection and stylus-friendly surface. The whole package is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Marvell processor, 1GB of RAM and a user-changeable 33.9Wh Li-Ion battery pack capable of running this ultra-durable slate for 10 hours.

You also get 16GB for content storage, expandable thanks to a microSD slot. There’s also a mircoUSB and micro HDMI ports as well. At the front the A1 has a 2MP fixed focus camera, while the back has the juicer 5MP auto-focus snapper with LED light. LTE or WiMAX connectivity options are present, too.

Panasonic Toughpad A1 official photos

Panasonic Toughpad B1

As for the other Toughpad, the 7-inch B1, there’s not much information available for it at this time. However, it’s still going to feature all the tough bells and whistles of it’s bigger brother.

Nevertheless, check it out posing for some official imagery.

Panasonic Toughpad B1

If are interested in getting one of those marine slates prepare your wallet to get destroyed. The pricing of the Toughpad A1 starts at $1,300 and the last time we checked this wasn’t exactly cheap. Naturally, the B1 should be cheaper, but how much is still anyone’s guess.

Expect both slates to hit the market early next year. And while you’re wondering why would anyone pay such a colossal amount of money for a tablet, check this video of what the Toughpads can withstand and it’ll hopefully answer your question.

HP Touchpad returns for a final push to meet incredible demand

HP Touchpad returns for a final push to meet incredible demand

The HP TouchPad is due for a comeback – well, sort of. HP will produce “one last run of TouchPads” to meet the unfulfilled demand.

Since HP introduced the price drop of the 16GB and 32GB versions to $99 and $149 respectively the interest in the tablet has risen so much that it actually scored the second spot as the hottest slate around after Apple’s iPad.

Sadly, the prerequisites that led to this high-ranking spot in global sales were the official announcement of the discontinuation of WebOS hardware (Pre 3, Veer, TouchPad) and the slashing of its prices. Some presume that the cost to build just one TouchPad circles around the $300 mark so HP is actually losing a heap of cash, despite the great sales figures and the added hype. I hope they make up part of the losses with the increased WebOS app sales – reports suggest a 3-to-5-fold increase in app downloads.

And it’s not like HP has forsaken its TouchPad altogether – they’ve actually just recently announced they will issue an OTA updated for the TouchPad that would increase functionality and the number of apps. HP is determined to continue supporting activated TouchPad’s and serve to their owners needs.

According to HP spokesman Mark Budgell the last batch of HP TouchPads will be available for purchase in a couple of weeks. The price however may not be $100 dead but more, depending on retailers.

Adobe strikes back: no Flash for iPhone

Adobe strikes back: no Flash for iPhone, end of story?

As expected, Steve Job’s “Thoughts on Flash” couldn’t remain unnoticed by Adobe so now they are striking back. Apple refuse to let Flash to the iPhone? Well, Adobe won’t even bother bringing it to them then.

This story started a long time ago but the pressure has never escalated to such a high level. At least now it’s clearer than ever: iPhone won’t get Flash support.

You’ve read Apple decision and here is what Adobe thinks about that. This is yesterday’s interview of Shantanu Narayen, the Adobe CEO:

While company’s CEO didn’t say Adobe will stop trying to work things out with Apple, Kevin Lynch, the author of Adobe’s blog post says that the decision has already been made and Adobe is shifting its focus “away from Apple devices for both Flash Player and AIR”.

That sounds like the end of the war between Apple and Adobe. Or is it another battle that is just about to start?

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE for Verizon and Galaxy Note LTE for AT&T hands-on

LTE is reigning supreme at this year’s CES and Samsung is one of the main reasons for that. The company unveiled a number of LTE-enabled versions of its smart devices and we are rushing to take them for a spin. We now have our first impressions of the Verizon-headed Galaxy Tab 7.7, and the AT&T-bound Galaxy Note.

The changes that the AT&T Galaxy Note brings include a different chipset, LTE connectivity and the four capacitive buttons, which replace the two-touch-plus-one hardware combo that we saw on the international version. Verizon’s Galaxy Tab 7.7, on the other hand trades the GSM/HSPA support for the speedier CDMA/LTE combo.

In case you need a refresh, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 features a 7.7-inch Super AMOLED Plus screen (1280x800px), Exynos platform (1.4GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 CPU, Mali-400MP GPU, 1GB RAM), a 3 megapixel camera with HD video recording, 16/32/64GB storage and microSD slot. The thing runs on Android Honeycomb with TouchWiz modifications.

Here are some hands-on pictures of the Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE:

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 LTE

If you want to learn more about the Galaxy Tab 7.7, check our preview article.

AT&T’s Galaxy Note comes with a slightingly less powerful chipset than its international sibling, with the Cortex-A9 CPU replaced with a dual-core Scorpion processor, but you’d hardly be able to tell the difference in everyday use. And the LTE speed boost will probably more than make up for it. Here are some live pictures of AT&T’s Galaxy Note:

There is still no info on the pricing and the exact availability of either gadget.

Korea Telecoms reveals Identity Tab Android slate

Korea Telecoms reveals Identity Tab Android slate, hits on the Galaxy Tab, looks like iPad

Just four days before the announcement of the Samsung Galaxy Tab (destined for SK Telecom in South Korea), another large Korean carrier announced its own Android-running tablet. The Korea Telecoms Identity tab is a 7” Eclair-running slate with a 1GHz CPU and 8 GB of internal storage.

There will also be an SD expansion slot and a DMB TV tuner inside the aluminum-clad tablet. A 3 megapixel camera will also be at your disposal, while the resolution of the display will be WVGA.

The highlights of the specs sheet continue with 512 MB of RAM, a built-in GPS, and standard miniUSB data and 3.5mm audio connectors. The built-in Wi-Fi antenna will support the b, g and n standards, while the 4000 mAh battery promises up to 72 hours of stand or 3.5 hours of video playback (which is quite modest if you ask us).

KT Identity TabKT Identity TabKT Identity Tab

Probably one of the best parts about the KT Identity Tab is its price. The tablet will go for just over 250 dollars, which is cheap to the point of unbelievable in our books. You can even get it for free if you are willing to sign a contract.

Acer will launch a $99 Android tablet and lower-priced Windows 8 slates in 2013

Acer will launch a $99 Android tablet and lower-priced Windows 8 slates in 2013

According to a report from the Wall Street Journal, Acer will launch a $99 Android tablet in 2013. The sub-$100 slate will go head to head with the numerous low-cost Chinese tablets which are offered in developing countries under a plethora of different brands.

The budget-friendly Acer Iconia Tab B1 will sport a dual-core 1.2GHz CPU (likely a Mediatek unit), a 7″ display with a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels, and 512MB of RAM. Built-in memory is reported at 8GB with a microSD card slot available as well. The OS on tap will be Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean. The above press image of the upcoming tablet has been confirmed as the real deal by the WSJ sources.

Curiously, ASUS has told the WSJ that it will not be threading into the sub-$100 tablet category, which is in line with recent rumors. The manufacturer is apparently satisfied with the Nexus 7 success and doesn’t feel the need to enter significantly lower price points.

Acer will also introduce lower-priced Windows 8 tablets next year. The tech giant has conceded that its current Windows 8 tablet lineup is a tad pricey.

Gametel's portable Bluetooth games controller to support iOS devices by CES 2012

Gametel's portable Bluetooth games controller to support iOS devices by CES 2012

We had some fun testing Gametel’s Portable Games Controller last month and were impressed with its performance, offering Android devices far better gaming prospects than with touchscreen only controls (Xperia PLAY aside).

Gametel supporting iOS (literally)

Now, in the lead up to CES, makers Fructel have revealed that the hardware gaming goodness is no longer exclusive to phones that favor Google, with iOS getting in on the action in the coming days.

This means iPhones, iPads and iPod Touches running iOS 4.0 and up will be good to go, out of the box and with their App Store app waiting in the wings alongside the number of games already available and more importantly, compatible with the Gametel, it could be a match made in heaven for iOS gamers everywhere.

In the meantime, check back at our review to see what the experience is all about and if you’re heading to CES, you will have the chance to try the Gametel out for yourself.

Here’s the full press release:

Gametel announces support for Apple iOS devices

Wireless gaming peripheral now compatible with iPhone and iPad

CES Unveiled, Las Vegas, 8th January 2012. Fructel, a gaming peripheral company, announces the Gametel now supports iOS devices. Compatible with Apple iPhone running iOS 4.0 or later and Apple iPad running iOS 3.2 or later, Gametel supports hundreds of arcade titles from the iCADE suite, including classics like Missile Commander, Asteroids, Centipede, Pong, Super Breakout, Lunar Lander and Warlords.

Alongside these retro titles, other selected iOS games, such as No Gravity, Silverfish, Super Crossfire HD and Terra Noctis, are also available to download from Apples iTunes App Store.

Bo Nyman, CEO of Fructel says: Gametel has proved popular among Android users but were pleased to bring support for the Apple iPhone and iPad. Now users can experience even more immersive gameplay using the Gametels console-style controls C freeing the touchscreen from fingers.

With a familiar controller design, Gametels D-pad, quartet of buttons and two shoulder triggers replicate console-style gaming controls; an impressive nine hour battery life provides more than enough playing time for long journeys and weekly commutes.

iPhone owners spend more time on their phone than Android users

iPhone owners spend more time on their phone than Android users, talk as much as they text

Experian Marketing Services has studied how Americans use their smartphones and has uncovered some curious differences between Android and iOS. On average, a smartphone owner would use their phone for 58 minutes each day.

This is where the first difference between the two platforms comes in – iPhone users spend an hour and 15 minutes on their phone on average, while Android users spend less than 50 minutes.

There are differences in how phones are used too – iPhone owners text as much as they call, while Android users spend about twice as long in voice calls than texting, voice calls account for nearly a third of the time an Android phone is used each day.

iOS users snap more photos and spend more time on social networks than Android users, who browse the web more.

There are some fairly neglected features of smartphones – only 2.3% of users watch videos (those who do, spend 5 minutes on average doing that) and GPS accounts for only 2% of a smartphone’s daily use. Reading is an even less common activity, scoring only 0.5% (not a big surprise, considering how small smartphone screens are and how cheap eReaders are).

Tablets shipments are predicted to overtake notebook shipments this year

Tablets shipments are predicted to overtake notebook shipments this year

Tablets killed the netbook star, but are notebooks next? According to analysts at NPD DisplaySearch, tablets shipments will overtake laptop shipments this year and will start building a gap to push them out in the following years.

What’s more interesting is that according to NPD‘s projections, the most popular screen size by the year 2017 will be 7.9″ and not the currently popular 7″ or 9.7″/10.1″.

This year, an estimated 207 million notebooks will be shipped, but tablets will grow 64% year-on-year and will reach 240 million sales. The second half of 2013 might see laptops reversing their decline a bit thanks to new processors that will bring the laptop experience closer to that of a tablet (the instant-on, always connected nature of tablets has so far eluded notebooks).

Right now, Apple’s iPad and its 9.7″ screen dominate the market, though it lost some ground last year and will be overtaken by tablets with a smaller screen this year. Curiously, the cheap 7″ tablets that have flooded the market will lose ground too – the analysts are predicting that the 7.9″ screen size will experience an explosive growth and become the dominant screen size for the years to come.

It’s no coincidence that the Apple iPad mini is just about the only tablet with a 7.9″ screen. The 11.6″ tablets are expected to grow too (we’ve seen it mostly on Windows 8 based tablets) and the mostly forgotten 8.9″ screen size (used in several Android tablets).

Keep in mind that such predictions can’t be trusted too much – with the price of 7″ tablets falling practically every day, seeing them lose ground seems unlikely.

Toshiba's FlashAir wireless LAN SD card cuts the cables to photo management [VIDEO]

Toshiba's FlashAir wireless LAN SD card cuts the cables to photo management [VIDEO]

This innocuous little white SD card is the first to use the SD association’s Wireless LAN standard, making file and photo management quick and cable-free as a result.

Toshiba FlashAir 8GB

This is the Toshiba FlashAir WLAN SD card and it’s showcasing its talents at this year’s CES. The card actually broke cover last year at IFA 2011 too but it’s here now to drum up interest before its official launch next month.

Of course we’ve seen SD cards have the power of WiFi bestowed upon them before, namely by the likes of Eye-Fi’s Flash memory solutions, but Toshiba’s FlashAir series takes a different, more direct approach to photo management.

Eye-Fi cards connect to existing WiFi networks in order to upload images on the fly, whereas Toshiba’s new cards actually broadcast their own 802.11 b/g/n hotspots, each complete with its own web server, not unlike that of KiesAir found on certain Samsung mobile devices.

Once the card is inside a camera and powered up, the web server provides access for any connected device to the card’s files, photos and anything in between.

Here’s the Toshiba FlashAir at IFA 2011, it’s an earlier build but the principles are very much the same

The current model demoed here is packed with 8GBs of class 6 Flash memory and like we said WiFi 802.11 b/g/n squeezed on there too, but Toshiba say we can expect some more spacious models at a later date this year.

If you can’t wait however the 8GB model is scheduled to hit stores in February and will retail for around $70. Interested? Let us know what you think in the comments.
